The Church Inn in Mobberley, Cheshire, has been recognised as the best pub in the UK, after securing the top title at last night’s National Pub & Bar Awards.
The inn, which dates back to the 18th century, was also one of 12 pubs to be announced as the best in their region.
The winners of the inaugural National Pub & Bar Awards were crowned at BAFTA, London, on 24 May at an event hosted by journalist and broadcaster Jay Rayner.
In total, 94 pubs and bars were in attendance, which had previously been announced as County Winners, before 12 Regional Winners were chosen and an overall National Winner selected.
The winner in the South East was The Swan Inn in Milton Keynes Village, while the winning pub in the South West was The Five Alls in Filkins. The White Horse in Brancaster Staithe won the award in the East of England, while the best pub in London went to The Culpeper. In the Midlands, The Tap in Derby claimed the prize for the East Midlands, while it was The Lord Clifden who won in the West.
The award for Yorkshire and the Humber went to Brewhaus Bradford, while Battlesteads claimed the top spot in the North East. The Welsh winner was The Stackpole Inn. In Northern Ireland, Blakes of the Hollow scooped the award, while the winner in Scotland was WEST on The Green.
Finally, the North West Pub of the Year went to The Church Inn in Mobberley, before the team at the pub returned to the stage to accept the title for National Pub & Bar of the Year from pubs minister Marcus Jones MP.
From perfect service to product range, aesthetic design or entertainment schedules, the 94 County Winners were selected by Pub & Bar magazine’s internal judging panel on all of the aspects required to provide ultimate hospitality within the on-trade.
“Huge congratulations to The Church Inn for being named the National Pub & Bar of the Year,” says Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which hosts the Awards. “Also, what an achievement from our County and Regional Winners – they can now celebrate the fact that they are the best in their area. It was an absolute pleasure to reward and acknowledge these incredible businesses at what was none other than a celebration of standout hospitality and business practice. This selection of pubs and bars shows just what a fantastic industry the UK on-trade is.”
